Braida, established by the late Giacomo Bologna, is synonymous with Barbera at its very best. Inspired by the great French wine regions he visited, notably Burgundy, Giacomo believed that Barbera could rival the world's finest wines. In 1961, he produced his first lightly effervescent Barbera. Continuing his quality journey through experimental vineyard plantings, reduced yields, and late harvesting, he caused a stir by being the first to age Barbera in small oak barrels in 1982, the original “Super Barbera”.
This led to the creation of the renowned crus: Uccellone, Bricco della Bigotta, and Ai Suma. Success and recognition were not achieved overnight, but Giacomo's sustained persistence led to Bricco dell’Uccellone being regarded as not only one of the finest wines of Barbera but one of the finest red wines of Italy.
Today, his daughter Raffaella manages the winery, and his son Giuseppe oversees
growing and production, with their spouses’ handling exports and administration.
This family operation values the environment, tradition, and heartfelt passion, resulting in wines that evoke deep emotions. Their uncompromising pursuit of quality, devotion to the terroir, innovation and sustainability are matched by their genuine conviviality and warmth of welcome. We have had the absolute pleasure of collaborating with them for over 20 years.
"Re Di Fiori" Riesling Langhe DOC 2018
Grapes: 100% Riesling
ABV: 12.5%
Vineyards & background:
The name "Re di Fiori", meaning "King of Flowers", reflects the wine's elegant and aromatic character, fitting for a Riesling grown in the picturesque hills of the Langhe region. The vineyards are located in the Tenuta Serra dei Fiori, where the high-altitude sites and southeast exposure enhance the freshness and minerality of the grapes. The mineral-rich soils, composed of ancient marine deposits, contribute to the wine’s complexity and vibrant acidity.
Winemaking:
The grapes are hand-picked, carefully selected, and gently pressed, with fermentation taking place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures. After fermentation, the wine is aged in the bottle for at least 6 months, allowing it to develop further complexity and elegance.
Appearance:
Bright straw-yellow with hints of green, indicative of the wine’s freshness and youth.
Nose:
The nose is intense and expressive, with aromas of citrus fruits like lemon and lime, along with notes of green apple. As the wine ages, subtle mineral nuances emerge, adding depth and complexity to its vibrant bouquet.
Palate:
On the palate, the wine showcases juicy citrus and green apple flavours, lifted by the natural high acidity typical of Riesling grown at high altitudes. There are also hints of spicy stone and a touch of minerality, reflecting the wine’s terroir. The finish is long, crisp, and refreshing, with a perfect balance between fruit and structure.
Food Pairing:
This Riesling pairs beautifully with fish and seafood dishes, from raw fish preparations to more elaborate courses. Its vibrant acidity also makes it an excellent companion for spicy Asian dishes and light salads.
Aging Potential:
While the wine is already vibrant in its youth, it will continue to evolve over the next 5-7 years, revealing more complex mineral notes and depth with time.
