Vineyards
Clos du Bourg is one of the most iconic vineyards in Vouvray, situated on a gently sloping site with clay-limestone soils over a chalky tuffeau subsoil. These soils contribute to the wine’s mineral complexity and ability to age for decades. The vineyard benefits from a temperate Loire Valley climate, which, in 1990, saw ideal conditions for noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), enhancing the richness and depth of the grapes. The 1er Trie designation signifies that only the first, most carefully selected harvest of grapes affected by noble rot was used for this wine.
Winemaking
The grapes were hand-harvested in multiple passes to ensure optimal ripeness. Fermentation occurred in temperature-controlled tanks to preserve the delicate fruit and floral characteristics. The wine was aged in old oak barrels, allowing for gentle oxygenation without imparting overt oak flavours, resulting in a harmonious and age-worthy Moelleux style.
Appearance
A radiant golden amber colour, reflecting its maturity and concentrated sweetness.
Nose
The bouquet is intensely aromatic, with notes of ripe quince, dried apricots, and honey. Subtle hints of orange blossom, almond, and a touch of flint add further complexity.
Palate
Rich and luscious, the palate offers layers of candied citrus, baked apple, and honeyed figs. A vibrant acidity balances the sweetness, ensuring freshness and elegance. The finish is long and lingering, with nuances of caramelised nuts and a chalky minerality.
Food pairing
This wine pairs beautifully with foie gras, creamy blue cheeses such as Roquefort, or decadent desserts like tarte tatin and crème brûlée. Or enjoy on its own as a contemplative after-dinner treat.
