Vineyards
The grapes for Felton Road Pinot Noir Block 3 2002 are sourced from a single vineyard block in Bannockburn, Central Otago. Block 3 is known for its schist and gravel soils, which provide excellent drainage and contribute to the wine's mineral complexity. The cool climate of Bannockburn, characterised by warm days and cool nights, allows for slow ripening, resulting in concentrated flavours and balanced acidity. The 2002 vintage benefited from exceptional growing conditions, yielding low crops of intense and ripe fruit.
Winemaking
80% of the grapes were destemmed with no crushing, while 20% were included as whole clusters to add complexity and a hint of sweetness to the mid-palate. Fermentation was carried out in open-top fermenters, followed by gravity draining directly into the underground cellar. The wine was aged for 11 months in French oak barrels, with 55% being new oak, to enhance structure and depth while preserving the purity of fruit.
Appearance
Deep ruby with garnet edges, indicative of its concentration and potential for further ageing.
Nose
The nose is complex and layered, with aromas of ripe cherries, dark plums, and dried herbs interwoven with notes of roasted coffee, dark chocolate, and subtle earthy undertones.
Palate
The palate delivers an impressive attack of concentrated dark fruits, including black cherry and blackberry, complemented by layers of roasted coffee, dark chocolate, and a hint of liquorice. The tannins are ripe and silky yet substantial, providing structure and balance. A vibrant acidity underpins the richness, leading to a long, elegant finish with a savoury edge.
Food pairing
This wine pairs beautifully with roasted duck, lamb with rosemary, or wild mushroom risotto. It also complements earthy dishes and hard cheeses, making it an excellent choice for refined meals.
