Vineyards and winemaking
The 2009 is a blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon and 32% Merlot from Haut-Bages Libéral’s Pauillac vineyards. Deep gravel over limestone provides rapid drainage and stored warmth, while parcels close to leading classified estates give Cabernet the conditions for ripe black fruit, graphite character and authoritative tannin.
Plots were harvested and vinified separately in temperature-controlled stainless-steel and concrete vats. The wine then matured for 16 to 18 months in French oak, approximately 40% new, an élevage that added cedar and polish while preserving the abundant fruit of the warm 2009 vintage.
Tasting notes
Appearance
Deep garnet with ruby depth and a gently evolved rim.
Nose
Blackcurrant, blueberry and blackberry are layered with violet, pencil shavings and cedar. Tobacco leaf and a restrained mocha note add mature complexity.
Palate
Full and concentrated, with cassis and dark plum framed by fine-grained, polished tannins. Bright acidity gives the generous fruit lift, carrying graphite, spice and mineral through a long finish.
Food pairing
Pair with roast sirloin and horseradish, lamb shoulder with garlic, venison with blackberry, or a mushroom and ale pie. Aged Cheddar or firm Comté are natural companions.
Background story
Château Haut-Bages Libéral was classified as a Fifth Growth in 1855. The Villars family revived the estate after acquiring it in the 1980s, progressively strengthening its focus on living soils and increasingly organic and biodynamic vineyard work.
The ripe 2009 vintage is now showing mature complexity while retaining Pauillac structure. Stand the bottle upright before opening and decant from sediment, allowing the wine to unfold gradually rather than exposing it to aggressive aeration. Serve at 16–18°C.
