Vineyards and winemaking
This Puligny-Montrachet brings together Chardonnay from selected village parcels on the Côte de Beaune. Limestone and clay soils provide the combination of drainage and water retention associated with the appellation, while the warm, dry 2020 season produced concentrated fruit that was harvested early to protect freshness.
The grapes are picked by hand, sorted and gently pressed. Fermentation begins in stainless steel before moving to French oak casks, with new wood limited to approximately 25%. Around 12 months of maturation on the lees builds texture while preserving the wine’s orchard fruit and mineral definition.
Tasting notes
Appearance
Bright pale gold with a fine green reflection.
Nose
Lemon, green apple and pear are layered with white flowers, toasted almond and a subtle flinty note.
Palate
Elegant and well proportioned, with ripe citrus and white peach balanced by fresh acidity. Gentle oak and lees contact add breadth without heaviness, while limestone-derived salinity gives the long finish clarity and lift.
Food pairing
Serve with seared scallops, roast turbot, chicken in a light cream and tarragon sauce, or a cauliflower and Comté gratin. Its balance of richness and freshness also suits gently smoked fish.
Background story
Domaine Berthelemot was established in 2006 by Brigitte Berthelemot from a mosaic of Côte de Beaune vineyards assembled through several historic estates. Her son Thomas now oversees the vinification, continuing an approach centred on restrained oak and clear site expression.
The 2020 village Puligny offers a broader portrait of the appellation than the single-parcel Les Levrons. Its ripe vintage character is kept in check by the mineral drive and measured élevage that define the domaine’s white wines.
