Vineyards
The grapes for Tardieu-Laurent Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Spéciale 2007 are sourced from old-vine Grenache vineyards, some over 100 years old, within the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. These vineyards are planted on the region’s signature galets roulés, which retain heat to encourage optimal ripening while also promoting excellent drainage. The Mediterranean climate, with warm days and cool nights, further enhances the development of concentrated flavours and balanced acidity.
Winemaking
The 2007 vintage is composed entirely of 100% Grenache, reflecting the estate's focus on showcasing this iconic Rhône varietal. The wine was fermented in small, temperature-controlled vats to retain the freshness and purity of the fruit. It then underwent careful ageing in a combination of new and one-year-old French oak barrels, adding complexity and depth without overpowering the fruit. Extended ageing ensured the integration of tannins and the development of a refined texture.
Appearance
Deep ruby core with garnet highlights, indicative of its intensity and elegance.
Nose
The nose is exceptional, with vibrant aromas of cassis, blackberry, and kirsch. Complex layers of garrigue, smoked meat, graphite, and floral notes add depth, while subtle hints of liquorice and sweet spice provide a captivating finish.
Palate
Full-bodied and richly textured, the palate showcases opulent dark fruit flavours interwoven with liquorice, black pepper, and savoury herbs. The fresh acidity balances the ripe, decadent fruit, while fine-grained tannins provide structure. The finish is long and sumptuous, with lingering mineral and spice undertones.
Food pairing
This wine pairs beautifully with herb-crusted lamb, venison stew, or slow-cooked duck. Its depth and complexity also make it an excellent match for roasted vegetables or hard cheeses such as aged Manchego.
