Vineyards
The Colinas Red Reserve 2009 is produced in the Bairrada region, renowned for its clay-limestone soils and maritime climate. The vineyards are planted with Touriga Nacional, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot, benefiting from the balance of warm days and cool Atlantic-influenced nights, which help to maintain acidity and structure in the wines.
Winemaking
Grapes were carefully selected and harvested at optimal ripeness. Fermentation took place under controlled temperatures to preserve the primary fruit characteristics. The wine was then aged in oak barrels, adding complexity and structure while integrating the tannins and enhancing the depth of flavour.
Appearance
Now showing a deep garnet colour with brick-red reflections at the rim, indicative of its maturity.
Nose
With age, the aromatic profile has developed layered complexity. Ripe black fruit notes of cherry and plum have evolved into dried fig and blackberry compote, complemented by nuances of cedar, dark chocolate, and black pepper. Tertiary aromas of leather, tobacco, and forest floor add further depth.
Palate
The palate remains full-bodied but has softened over time, with well-integrated tannins providing a smooth and refined texture. The fruit profile has evolved, with stewed blackberries and plums mingling with savoury spice, dried herbs, and earthy undertones. A touch of balsamic and cocoa lingers on the long, elegant finish, reflecting the wine’s evolution in bottle.
Food pairing
This mature wine pairs exceptionally well with slow-cooked meats such as braised lamb or beef short ribs. It also complements game dishes, aged cheeses, and rich mushroom-based recipes, where its depth and tertiary notes can shine.
Background story
Established in 2009, Colinas de São Lourenço is situated in Anadia, the heart of the Bairrada region. The estate spans 65 hectares of vineyards planted on rolling hills with clay-limestone soils. The vineyards feature a selection of both native and international grape varieties, with Touriga Nacional, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot forming the backbone of this wine. The Colinas Red Reserve 2009 is a testament to the estate’s commitment to crafting age-worthy wines that reflect the distinct terroir of Bairrada.
This wine has reached an ideal stage of maturity, where its structure, fruit, and tertiary characteristics are in harmony. Decanting is recommended to allow the aromas to fully express themselves before serving.
