Vineyards
This Amarone Riserva is crafted from a blend of Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara, sourced from vineyards in the Fumane valley, at the heart of the Valpolicella Classico region. The limestone-rich soils and temperate climate provide ideal conditions for slow ripening, allowing for enhanced complexity and depth. The unique terroir and meticulous grape selection ensure a wine of remarkable intensity, structure, and character.
Winemaking
After harvest, the grapes undergo the traditional appassimento process, where they are dried until the end of the year to concentrate their sugars and flavours. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats under controlled temperatures to preserve the purity of the fruit. The wine is then aged for 40 months in oak barrels, followed by 12 months in bottle before release. This extended maturation results in additional richness, density, and complexity.
Appearance
Deep ruby red with garnet reflections, showing signs of evolution while retaining vibrancy.
Nose
An intricate and expressive bouquet, with aromas of wild berries, sour cherry, and plum, complemented by hints of leather, black pepper, and dark chocolate. Subtle earthy notes and baking spices add further complexity.
Palate
Full-bodied and richly textured, this Amarone Riserva balances power and finesse, with layers of black fruit, spice, and balsamic undertones. The tannins are structured yet refined, leading to a long, persistent finish with depth and elegance. Unlike many Amarones that lean toward excessive sweetness, Corteforte maintains an expressive yet balanced profile.
Food pairing
A perfect match for Risotto all’Amarone, slow-cooked red meats, game, and mature cheeses. Its depth and structure also make it an excellent choice for leisurely enjoyment by the fireplace.
Background story
Amarone Riserva is a relatively recent designation, requiring an additional year of barrel ageing before release. This extended maturation enhances density and richness, making it a truly special expression of Amarone.
Corteforte, established in 1989 by Carlo Maria Cerutti, is located in the historically significant Fumane valley, north of Verona. The estate originated in the early 1400s as a fortified structure with four towers, evolving over time into a noble residence that now features a boutique hotel, restaurant, and winery, all surrounded by 3 hectares of premium vineyard plots.
The winery employs organic and sustainable practices and boasts a vast underground storage area for extensive bottle ageing, despite its modest annual production of around 20,000 bottles. The estate features a variety of barrel sizes and a wide range of winemaking techniques, with a strong focus on the appassimento method.
Critics regard Corteforte as a jewel in the crown of the Amarone region, but the true essence of its wines lies in their authenticity, finesse, and character. From the impressive Valpolicella Ripasso to the exemplary single-vineyard Amarones, Corteforte continues to set a high standard for excellence in the region.
