Vineyards
This Amarone Riserva is made from a blend of 65% Corvina, 15% Rondinella, and 5% indigenous varieties including Molinara, Dindarella, Pelara, and Oseleta. The vineyards are located in the Fumane Valley, at the heart of the Valpolicella Classico zone, where limestone-rich soils and a temperate climate provide ideal conditions for ripening. The unique terroir, combined with meticulous grape selection, ensures a wine of great intensity, structure, and complexity.
Winemaking
After harvest, the grapes undergo the traditional appassimento process, where they are dried for several months to concentrate their sugars and flavours. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel vats at controlled temperatures, preserving the purity of the fruit. The wine is then aged for 30 months in Burgundian tonneaux, followed by 24 months in stainless steel tanks and a further 18 months in bottle before release, allowing for full integration of tannins and a refined expression of Amarone’s signature depth.
Appearance
Deep ruby red with garnet hues, reflecting its concentration and maturity.
Nose
A complex and layered bouquet, with aromas of raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries, backed by notes of plum, black cherry, cinnamon, pepper, liquorice, and ginger.
Palate
Full-bodied and structured, this Amarone balances power and elegance, with a refined tannic structure and a long, persistent finish. The spice-driven profile leans towards savoury complexity rather than overt sweetness, making it a sophisticated and distinctive expression of Amarone.
Food pairing
This Amarone Riserva is a perfect match for roasted red meats, game, and mature cheeses. It is also an excellent choice by the fireplace, optionally accompanied by a fine cigar.
Background story
Corteforte, established in 1989 by Carlo Maria Cerutti, is located in the historically significant Fumane valley, north of Verona. The estate originated in the early 1400s as a fortified structure with four towers, evolving over time into a noble residence that now features a boutique hotel, restaurant, and winery, all surrounded by 3 hectares of premium vineyard plots.
The winery employs organic and sustainable practices and boasts a vast underground storage area for extensive bottle ageing, despite its modest annual production of around 20,000 bottles. The estate features a variety of barrel sizes and a wide range of winemaking techniques, with a strong focus on the appassimento method.
Critics regard Corteforte as a jewel in the crown of the Amarone region, but the true essence of its wines lies in their authenticity, finesse, and character. From the impressive Valpolicella Ripasso to the exemplary single-vineyard Amarones, Corteforte continues to set a high standard for excellence in the region.
