Vineyards
The Nebbiolo grapes for Morra Gabriele's "Foravia" 2019 are cultivated on 4.5 hectares of biodynamically farmed vineyards in Piedmont, with 3 hectares located in Barbaresco. The clay and silt-rich soils provide structure and finesse to the wines, while lunar pruning cycles and natural fertilisers, including legumes, grasses, and mustard, enhance soil health and biodiversity. This sustainable approach, using only sulphur and copper for vine protection, reflects the estate’s commitment to working in harmony with nature.
Winemaking
"Foravia," meaning "off the beaten path" in the Piedmontese dialect, represents Morra Gabriele’s response to climate change, focusing on fresher, more elegant styles of Nebbiolo. The wine is crafted with 60% whole clusters, covered with pressed must, and fermented spontaneously using indigenous yeasts. After fermentation, the intact grape clusters are pressed, and any residual sugar ferments for 10–15 days. Following malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged equally in concrete tanks and seasoned oak barrels (over 10 years old), ensuring a balanced maturation.
Appearance
Bright ruby red with garnet reflections, showcasing its vibrancy and youthful energy.
Nose
Aromas of wild strawberries and dried flowers dominate the bouquet, complemented by subtle notes of red currants, herbs, and a hint of earthiness.
Palate
The palate is elegant and structured, with flavours of fresh red berries, cranberry, and delicate floral undertones. Silky, well-integrated tannins and refreshing acidity create balance, leading to a persistent finish with a touch of minerality and spice.
Food pairing
This Nebbiolo is versatile, pairing beautifully with charcuterie, truffle-based dishes, and roasted poultry. Its elegant structure also makes it an excellent choice for sipping as an apéritif or enjoying with lighter pasta dishes.
Background story
Founded in 2013 by sommelier Stefano Campaniello and farmer Gabriele Testa, Morra Gabriele is a small-scale, biodynamic winery in Barbaresco, producing just 25,000 bottles annually from 4.5 hectares of vineyards. Their philosophy centres on letting nature take its course, believing that "not doing" can be as powerful as "doing." Every step, from vineyard management to winemaking, prioritises observation and respect for the land, resulting in wines that authentically reflect the character of each vintage and terroir.
"Foravia," first produced in 2018, embodies the estate’s innovative spirit, offering a fresh and elegant Nebbiolo style crafted in response to climate change. The result is a wine that perfectly balances tradition and modernity, showcasing the potential of biodynamic practices in Piedmont.
