Origin and production

This 1965 Bas-Armagnac was produced at Château de Bordeneuve from the Guasch family's estate vineyards near Eauze. Ugni Blanc and Baco are the property's traditional grapes, grown on the region's tawny sandy soils for the acidity and structure required by long-lived eau-de-vie.

The base wine was distilled once in the estate's continuous copper alembic, then matured slowly in French oak in cellars with beaten-earth floors. Bottled as an individual vintage, it retains the identity of the 1965 harvest rather than being incorporated into an age-stated blend.

Tasting notes

Appearance

Rich mahogany-amber with burnished gold at the rim and a luminous clarity.

Nose

Stewed prune, dried apricot and candied orange are layered with toasted almond, cedar, cocoa and a trace of old leather.

Palate

Luxurious and composed, with honeyed fig and caramelised fruit held by fine oak structure. Cinnamon, walnut and dark chocolate build through the middle, while mature rancio gives the finish a long, savoury and gently smoky character.

Serving suggestions

Pour a small measure neat and give it at least ten minutes in a tulip glass. It needs little accompaniment, though a square of high-cocoa chocolate, walnut bread, or an aged hard cheese will echo its mature flavours.

Background story

Baron de Sigognac is the principal Armagnac range of the Guasch family's Domaine de Bordeneuve. By growing, distilling and ageing on the same estate, the family preserves a direct link between the sandy Bas-Armagnac landscape and the finished spirit.

The château's reserve of vintage casks reaches back through many decades, with each year kept separate until judged ready for bottling. The 1965 is therefore both a rare mature spirit and a precise record of one harvest, suited to slow contemplation or a significant anniversary.
