Vineyards

El Jaral is produced from Barcolobo’s own biodynamic vineyards located at 705 metres above sea level within the Riberas de Castronuño – Vega del Duero Nature Reserve. The vines grow in sandy loam soils with a pebble-strewn surface, which retain moisture and support balanced vine development. The vineyard, trained in a vertical shoot positioning (VSP) system, benefits from a continental climate, which provided warm, dry conditions in 2014 that were ideal for producing concentrated, mature grapes.

Winemaking

El Jaral is crafted from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Tempranillo, with each grape hand-harvested in the early morning to preserve aromatic intensity. After selection, the grapes underwent a careful fermentation process and were aged for 20 months in new French oak barrels. This extended oak aging added depth and complexity, with regular racking to further enhance the wine's structure and integration of flavours.

Appearance

Deep cherry red with violet hues, highlighting its maturity and rich concentration.

Nose

El Jaral reveals ripe fruit aromas, accompanied by balsamic notes, cedar, tobacco, and hints of sweet spice, creating a fragrant and inviting bouquet.

Palate

This full-bodied wine offers a harmonious balance of fruit and oak, with flavours of dark berries, liquorice, and tobacco. The palate is persistent, with fine tannins and a lingering, refined finish.

Food pairing

Ideal for pairing with robust dishes such as stews, game meats, and roasts. Serve slightly chilled to enhance its complex profile.

Background story

Barcolobo, nestled in Castilla y León, spans 20 hectares, growing Tempranillo, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon and managing an old-vine Verdejo vineyard. With a continental climate influenced by Atlantic conditions, the vineyards lie on a unique mix of pebble, sand, and alluvial soils. Situated in the La Rinconada estate within the Riberas de Castronuño – Vega del Duero Nature Reserve, this landscape is rich in wildlife such as deer, wild boar, and purple herons. Barcolobo’s commitment to ecological practices and minimal intervention reflects their dedication to preserving the natural environment, crafting wines that honour both heritage and terroir.
