Vineyard and winemaking
The Cabernet Sauvignon is grown around Socuéllamos, where vineyards sit at approximately 700 metres above sea level. La Mancha’s continental climate brings hot, dry summers and cold winters, while the altitude helps preserve freshness as the grapes develop their dark-fruit character.
The grapes are harvested at full ripeness, destemmed and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. Careful extraction retains the variety’s colour and structure without making the wine overly firm, producing an approachable expression centred on fruit and gentle spice.
Tasting notes
Appearance
Clear, bright ruby with a youthful purple edge.
Nose
Blackberry and cassis are joined by damson, a touch of dried leaf and restrained peppery spice.
Palate
Supple and medium-bodied, with ripe blackcurrant and plum framed by smooth, lightly grippy tannins. Fresh acidity keeps the fruit lively, while a savoury herbal note adds definition before a clean finish of blackberry and spice.
Food pairing
This is an easy red to place alongside Cumberland sausages with onion gravy, a classic cottage pie or chargrilled pork chops with sage. Its dark fruit and moderate structure also work well with a lentil and mushroom shepherd’s pie.
Background story
Bodegas Cristo de la Vega was founded in Socuéllamos in 1955 by 25 local growers who joined together to build on the area’s long-established winegrowing tradition. The cooperative has expanded considerably since then, combining the knowledge of its members with modern cellar facilities.
Camina Cabernet Sauvignon reflects the accessible side of the estate’s range: a familiar international variety interpreted through La Mancha’s sunny continental climate, with generosity of fruit and uncomplicated drinkability at its centre.
