Vineyards
Château Lafon-Rochet is located in the Saint-Estèphe appellation of Bordeaux’s Médoc region, classified as a Fourth Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. The estate’s 41 hectares of vineyards are planted on gravelly clay soils, which provide excellent drainage and are ideal for cultivating Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyard is composed of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot, with vines averaging 35 years in age. Sustainable viticulture practices are employed to preserve the health of the vineyard and its surrounding environment.
Winemaking
The 2000 vintage was marked by ideal growing conditions, with warm days and cool nights promoting excellent ripening. The grapes were hand-harvested and underwent meticulous sorting before fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The wine was aged for 16-18 months in French oak barrels, 50% of which were new, to enhance complexity and integrate the tannins.
Appearance
Deep garnet with a slightly brick-hued rim, reflecting its maturity.
Nose
The bouquet is elegant and evolved, offering aromas of blackcurrant, plum, and dried cherry, interwoven with notes of cedar, leather, and a touch of graphite.
Palate
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and harmonious, with flavours of ripe dark fruits, cassis, and blackberries, complemented by savoury undertones of tobacco, earth, and spice. The tannins are fine-grained and well-integrated, providing structure, while the balanced acidity adds freshness. The finish is long and lingering, with hints of dried herbs and mineral notes.
Food pairing
This Saint-Estèphe pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, beef Wellington, or venison. It also complements hard cheeses like aged Comté, as well as earthy dishes such as mushroom risotto.
