Vineyard and winemaking
La Carrière is a single-vineyard Chénas from the northern Beaujolais crus. Its alluvial soils are strewn with small stones, giving Gamay a firm mineral line beneath the vineyard's ripe, dark-fruited character.
The Chasselay family farms organically, with Ecocert certification, favouring plant-based preparations and avoiding synthetic herbicides and pesticides. The grapes are handled in a traditional Beaujolais manner with partial carbonic maceration, preserving perfume and fruit while drawing out enough structure for the wine to develop gracefully in bottle.
Tasting notes
Appearance
Clear ruby red, now showing a gentle garnet tint at the rim.
Nose
Fragrant peony and rose sit above blackberry, dark cherry and a subtle earthy spice. With air, the fruit becomes more savoury and woodland-like without losing its freshness.
Palate
Medium-bodied and poised, with blackberry and cherry carried by lively acidity. Fine, settled tannins and a stony mineral edge give shape to the palate, leading to a dry finish touched by pepper, dried flowers and red fruit.
Food pairing
The wine's floral lift and measured structure suit roast guinea fowl with lentils, pork tenderloin with prunes, mushroom and tarragon pie, or a warm salad of Puy lentils, beetroot and goat's cheese. Serve lightly cool rather than at room temperature.
Background story
The Chasselay family has grown vines in the Beaujolais area for more than six centuries. Claire and Fabien Chasselay represent the latest generation, combining that long family history with certified organic farming and a precise, low-intervention approach in the cellar.
La Carrière is a focused expression of Chénas rather than a broad regional blend. The 2016 was awarded 90 points by Wine Enthusiast, which noted its blackberry fruit, balanced structure and mineral edge. As with any mature wine, bottle condition can vary; stand upright before opening and pour carefully, allowing a short period in the glass rather than prolonged decanting.
