Vineyard and winemaking
Verdejo is sourced from selected vineyards around Socuéllamos, approximately 700 metres above sea level. Hot, dry summers promote flavour development, while the continental setting and elevation help retain the grape’s naturally lively, aromatic character.
The fruit is fermented at a controlled low temperature in stainless-steel tanks, allowing the must to develop its citrus, melon and floral aromas without oak influence. The wine is bottled young to preserve its freshness and directness.
Tasting notes
Appearance
Bright pale lemon with delicate green reflections.
Nose
Grapefruit, lime and fresh melon are lifted by honeysuckle and a subtle note of green herbs.
Palate
Dry, light and energetic, with citrus fruit leading into pear and honeydew melon. A faint herbal bitterness, characteristic of Verdejo, gives the finish shape and keeps the wine brisk rather than simple.
Food pairing
The wine’s citrus character suits grilled mackerel with lemon and parsley, crab cakes with herb mayonnaise, or a pea and goat’s cheese tart. It also makes a refreshing partner for patatas bravas, particularly when the sauce carries a gentle smoky heat.
Background story
Despierta forms part of Bodegas Cristo de la Vega’s modern, fruit-focused range. The cooperative has worked in Socuéllamos since 1955, drawing on the vineyards and experience of local growers while continuing to develop its cellar practices.
Although Verdejo is most closely associated with north-western Spain, here it is interpreted through the warmer conditions of La Mancha. The emphasis remains on freshness, aromatic clarity and an easy, dry style intended for early enjoyment.
