Vineyards and winemaking
Les Grèves is one of Beaune's most highly regarded Premier Cru climats. Domaine de Bellene's parcel contains notably old Pinot Noir vines, rooted in stony, limestone-rich soils that naturally limit vigour and bring both concentration and a fine mineral tension to the wine.
The vines are tended with organic and biodynamic practices, and the grapes are picked by hand. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in open wooden vats, with a proportion of whole bunches retained according to the vintage. The wine is matured for around eleven months in French oak and bottled without fining or filtration.

Appearance
Deep ruby-garnet, with a clear rim and the first signs of maturity.
Nose
Violet, black cherry and ripe cranberry lead, followed by clove, sandalwood and a discreet note of roasted coffee. Time in the glass reveals dried herbs and warm stone beneath the fruit.
Palate
Broad and concentrated, reflecting the warmth of the 2015 vintage, yet held in balance by fresh acidity. Ripe cherry and plum are framed by firm, finely grained tannins, with cocoa, spice and mineral notes extending the finish.
Food pairing
Serve with venison loin and beetroot, beef Wellington, roast duck with celeriac purée, or a lentil and wild mushroom gratin. The wine's depth can also stand alongside Époisses, provided the cheese is served at a moderate ripeness.
Background story
Nicolas Potel established Domaine de Bellene in Beaune in 2005, building a domaine centred on old vines, detailed vineyard work and restrained cellar intervention. The name Bellene recalls the ancient name of Beaune and reflects the estate's close focus on the individual climats of Burgundy.
The powerful but balanced 2015 vintage is particularly well suited to the natural stature of Les Grèves, and this wine was awarded 94 points by Wine Enthusiast. It is now entering a mature phase; bottle variation is possible, so stand upright before opening and allow the wine to unfold gradually in the glass.
