Vineyards and winemaking
This Chardonnay comes from east-facing vineyards close to Saint-Véran and Pouilly-Fuissé. Shallow clay-limestone soils allow the roots to meet the bedrock, bringing mineral freshness to the generous fruit of the southern Mâconnais.
The grapes are harvested by hand and fermented in a combination of stainless steel and oak barrels. Ageing on the lees adds breadth and a gentle savoury texture while the restrained use of wood leaves the orchard and citrus fruit clearly defined.
Tasting notes
Appearance
Bright pale gold with youthful green reflections.
Nose
Fresh pear, green apple and lemon zest are lifted by acacia blossom, with a quiet suggestion of almond and cream beneath.
Palate
Dry, supple and energetic, combining white peach and crisp apple with clean acidity. A fine chalky note and discreet lees-derived texture give the wine shape before a bright, citrus-led finish.
Food pairing
Pair with grilled lemon sole, crab cakes with herb mayonnaise, a chicken and spring-leek pie, or a salad of roast pear, chicory and goat's cheese. Serve cool, allowing a few minutes in the glass for the texture to open.
Background story
Domaine de Pouilly is based in Solutré-Pouilly at the heart of the Mâconnais. Brothers Vincent and Pierre-Antoine Besson represent the family's fifth generation of winegrowers, following a line that began with their grandfather Pétrus in 1933.
The domaine covers approximately 20 hectares across numerous parcels in Pouilly-Fuissé and neighbouring appellations. Many vines are more than 50 years old, and the brothers combine sustainable cultivation with close personal oversight from vineyard to bottle. This Bourgogne Blanc offers an accessible introduction to their house character: ripe enough to be generous, but defined by freshness and a clear limestone imprint.
