Nestled in the heart of the Loire Valley, Domaine Les Chaumes has been a family-run estate since 1770. Today, the 9th generation of the Bardin family—Jean-Jacques and Monique Bardin, along with their children Gwendoline, Vickie, and Jorris—manage this exceptional 55-hectare vineyard. The estate's parcels are spread across prestigious appellations, including AOP Pouilly-sur-Loire, AOP Pouilly-Fumé, AOP Sancerre, and IGP Côtes de La Charité.
The Bardin family’s commitment to sustainable viticulture is exemplified by their adherence to the High Environmental Value (HVE) approach, drastically limiting pesticide use and incorporating organic farming practices to maintain the health of the soil and vines. Their Sancerre vineyards are located in the communes of Saint-Satur, Sancerre, Thauvenay, and Ménétréol-sous-Sancerre, benefiting from diverse terroirs composed primarily of silex and clay-limestone soils.
The Bardin family meticulously manage the vineyards using hoeing and preserving natural vegetation, avoiding chemicals and pesticides, which enhances soil quality and promotes biodiversity. Grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness. The white wines are vinified in stainless steel vats with total lees contact for 3 to 4 months, enhancing freshness and fruit expression. The red wines are vinified in second and third-use oak barrels for 10 to 12 months, depending on the plot, imparting a gentle wood character. Domaine Les Chaumes produces wines with finesse and exceptional balance that capture the essence of their terroir.
This 2016 Sancerre Rouge showcases bright red berry aromas with subtle floral and earthy undertones. On the palate, it’s fresh and elegant, with soft tannins and flavours of redcurrants and cranberries, balanced by a vibrant acidity and a touch of minerality. A clean, refined finish makes it a perfect pairing for roasted poultry, mushroom dishes, or charcuterie.
