Vineyard and winemaking
Les Charmes is one of Morgon’s recognised climats, its slopes shaped by decomposed granite and schist that suit old Gamay vines. Château Grange Cochard works the site sustainably, encouraging biodiversity and balanced growth so the 40- to 70-year-old vines can deliver fragrant fruit with depth rather than simple ripeness.
The 2019 grapes were picked by hand and underwent traditional semi-carbonic maceration. Maturation for 12 months across stainless steel and older oak barrels preserved the wine’s red-fruit clarity while adding a discreet savoury texture and allowing the site’s mineral line to remain prominent.
Tasting notes
Appearance
Bright ruby red with clear garnet highlights.
Nose
Red cherry, cranberry and crushed raspberry are scented with rose petal and cinnamon. Gentle notes of earth, dried thyme and wet stone bring quiet complexity beneath the fruit.
Palate
Silky and poised, with juicy red berries, fresh acidity and finely shaped tannins. A light savoury edge gathers through the middle before a refined finish of cherry, mineral and subtle spice.
Food pairing
Pair with roast chicken and tarragon, grilled salmon, pork tenderloin with mustard, or a beetroot and mushroom pithivier. Soft-rind cheese and good-quality saucisson are natural companions too.
Background story
Château Grange Cochard is a small family estate in Morgon, working its vineyards sustainably and keeping cellar intervention measured. The aim is to express the character of each site through old-vine Gamay, hand harvesting and an élevage that supports rather than dominates the fruit.
Les Charmes shows the more graceful side of Morgon, with perfume and silky texture alongside the cru’s underlying structure. The 2019 received 90 points from Wine Enthusiast and now offers a harmonious balance between vivid fruit and early savoury development.
