Vineyard and winemaking
Pomares Branco brings together Gouveio, Viosinho and Rabigato from small Douro parcels with differing altitudes, exposures and soils. Quinta Nova uses these contrasts to assemble a white that captures the valley’s varied microterroirs while retaining the freshness found in its cooler sites.
The 2021 grapes were harvested by hand and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel. The emphasis is on purity and immediate expression, preserving the varieties’ white-fruit, citrus and floral character without the weight of obvious oak.
Tasting notes
Appearance
Pale lemon-straw with bright green reflections.
Nose
Meadow flowers, green reinette apple and vine peach are lifted by lime zest and a fresh herbal note.
Palate
Vibrant and clean, with crisp white-fleshed fruit, peach and lime carried by lively acidity. A light mineral texture gives definition through the middle, and the finish is refreshing, poised and notably long.
Food pairing
Serve with grilled trout, dressed crab, chicken and herb salad or courgette fritters with mint yoghurt. Its bright citrus character also makes it a good match for fish tacos.
Background story
Pomares began with Quinta Nova’s exploration of younger Douro whites and the many combinations offered by altitude, exposure, soil and local varieties. Grapes from the estate and selected small growers are blended to create a personal but accessible portrait of the region.
Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo has been part of the Douro landscape for more than two centuries. Its historic cellar dates to 1764, and the estate has been owned by the Amorim family since 1999.
