Vineyards

The organic vineyards of Quinta da Boa Esperança are located north of Lisbon, at a higher altitude near the historic fishing town of Ericeira, which is also known as a world-class surfing destination. This geographical location benefits the vineyards with both maritime and altitude influences, contributing to the freshness and balance of the wines produced there

Winemaking

The 2015 vintage of Alicante Bouschet showcases the intensity of this varietal, cultivated in the clay-limestone soils of the estate. The grapes were hand-harvested and carefully selected before fermentation at controlled temperatures. The wine was aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, followed by further maturation in the bottle. Now, several years after its release, the wine has developed additional layers of complexity, softening the tannins while maintaining the rich character of the vintage.

Appearance

Deep garnet with a slightly evolved rim, indicative of the wine's maturity.

Nose

The nose offers aromas of ripe black fruit—blackberries, plums—intertwined with balsamic nuances, cocoa, and subtle liquorice. The oak aging brings out delicate spices and a hint of leather, adding complexity to the aromatic profile.

Palate

With time, the wine has evolved into a well-integrated, rounded experience. The tannins have softened, creating a smooth and velvety mouthfeel. Black fruit flavours remain prominent, balanced by the gentle spice and smokiness from the oak. The acidity still provides freshness, while the finish is long and lingering, with hints of dark chocolate and earthiness.

Food pairing

This matured wine pairs excellently with roasted meats, game, and aged cheeses. Its softened tannins and complex flavours also complement slow-cooked dishes and hearty stews, making it a versatile choice for rich and savoury meals.

Background story

After acquiring an ancestral family vineyard that had existed for hundreds of years, Quinta da Boa Esperança was established by Artur Gama and his wife Eva in 2014. Their 11 hectares of organic vineyards lie in the heart of Zibreira, within the renowned Lisbon Wine Region. Benefiting from proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and Montejunto Ridge, the vineyards enjoy high elevation, ample sun exposure, and maritime influences, cultivating exceptional grapes of both local and international varietals, including Fernão Pires, Arinto, Sauvignon Blanc, Alvarinho, Syrah, Touriga Nacional, and Alicante Bouschet.

Dedicated to sustainability, the Gama family adheres to organic principles, extending their eco-friendly practices to growing their own vegetables, fruit, herbs, and breeding chickens in their kitchen garden. This holistic approach ensures a harmonious coexistence with nature, reflected in their meticulous vineyard care, minimal intervention, and manual harvesting, resulting in wines that truly express the essence of their land.
