Vineyard and winemaking
Tonnix Branco 2025 is a collaborative wine produced by Quinta de la Rosa near Pinhão in the Douro's Cima Corgo sub-region. The estate's vineyards rise from the River Douro to around 500 metres, with varied exposures and schist and granite soils helping the wines retain freshness and mineral character. The blend comes from old vines and comprises Viosinho, Rabigato, Alvarinho and Códega do Larinho.
The wine is fermented in small stainless-steel vats, with some lots aged for four months in used French oak. It combines fresh citrus and floral character with a polished texture and the balance needed to accompany seafood.
Tasting notes
Appearance
Bright pale gold with youthful green-silver reflections and a clean, brilliant appearance.
Nose
Expressive and elegant, with well-defined white-flower aromas and fresh citrus notes.
Palate
Medium-bodied and balanced, with fresh citrus fruit carried by a polished, enveloping texture. Lively, well-integrated acidity brings tension and freshness, sustaining a persistent finish. The combination of texture and freshness makes it a versatile partner for fish and shellfish.
Food pairing
Designed with seafood in mind, Tonnix is particularly well suited to oysters, grilled prawns, crab, scallops, monkfish, grilled or roasted white fish and fritto misto. It also works especially well with fish and chips, where its citrus freshness and acidity provide a clean counterpoint to the richness of the dish. The wine has a proven affinity with grilled monkfish and seafood dishes.
Background story
Tonnix is a particularly distinctive collaboration between chefs Mark Hix and Mitch Tonks and Quinta de la Rosa. The name itself combines Tonks + Hix, and the wine was conceived following a visit by the two chefs to Quinta de la Rosa more than 15 years ago. Their aim was to create a Portuguese white specifically suited to the seafood-focused cooking found in their restaurants.
The original concept has remained remarkably consistent: a fresh, characterful Douro white intended to work effortlessly alongside fish and shellfish. The distinctive label was designed by British artist Tracey Emin, adding another unusual element to what began as a collaboration over lunch in the Douro.
Quinta de la Rosa itself is a historic family-owned estate situated just 2km from Pinhão in the heart of the Cima Corgo. The estate's steep schist vineyards and varied elevations are particularly important for its white wines, helping preserve acidity, minerality and freshness in a region known for its intense summer heat.
Fresh, citrus-led and mineral, Tonnix Branco 2025 has the texture and character to accompany a seafood-focused meal.
