Vineyards

Sourced from select vineyards in Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza, Argentina, situated at approximately 900 metres above sea level. The region's poor, rocky soils and extended growing season, due to significant diurnal temperature variation, contribute to the wine's bold and intense flavours.

Winemaking

Made from 100% Malbec, the grapes undergo careful destemming followed by a four-day cold maceration. Fermentation occurs at low temperatures (26°C) to enhance aromatic quality, with gentle pump-overs to ensure delicate extraction. The wine is aged for three months in third-use French oak barrels, preserving its fresh fruit character while adding subtle complexity.

Appearance

Purplish-red colour, reflecting its youthful vibrancy.

Nose

Expressive aromas of fresh red fruits, notably plums, complemented by subtle violet notes and a hint of spice.

Palate

Medium-bodied and balanced, the palate showcases ripe red fruit flavours with soft tannins and bright acidity. A smooth texture leads to a long, persistent finish, making it approachable yet satisfying.

Food pairing

This Malbec pairs excellently with grilled red meats, pasta dishes, and cheese-based recipes. Its versatility also makes it a delightful companion to various international cuisines.

Background story

Casarena consider themselves custodians and champions of the distinctive terroir of Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza, producing a singular range of varietal and blended wines from their single vineyards: Jamilla, Lauren, Owen, and Naoki, located in Perdriel, Agrelo, and Alto Agrelo. The vineyards are planted in alluvial soils with a distinctive mineral component, and due to the varying degrees of soil composition, elevation, and climate within Luján de Cuyo, winemaker Martina Galeano is able to create markedly different profiles within a varietal, showcasing the unique expression of each single vineyard.

Originally built in 1937, the winery was renovated in 2008, providing the investment needed to continue the Casarena story while carefully maintaining the original character of the structure. Today, Casarena is recognised for its dedication to terroir-driven wines that highlight the diversity of Mendoza’s vineyards.
