The Creation of Rosso di Braida

"Rosso di Braida" 2020 was born out of a meeting of minds, and palates, between the Braida team, Sommelier’s Choice and the staff from a fine dining steak restaurant group in order to create a perfect wine for pairing with steak. This blend brings together the freshness of Barbera with the structure and depth of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, resulting in a wine with complexity, balance, and versatility.

Vineyards and winemaking

Sourced from Braida's Monferrato vineyards, the blend benefits from sandy-clay soils and an ideal microclimate. The wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks, preserving the fruit's vibrancy, and then aged in large oak barrels to soften tannins and add layers of spice.

Appearance

Deep ruby red with purple highlights.

Nose

Ripe red fruit notes of cherry and plum from Barbera, combined with black currant and blackberry from Cabernet Sauvignon, with hints of cedar, vanilla, and spice from oak aging.

Palate

Full-bodied and balanced with flavours of red cherries, dark berries, and fine silky tannins. The finish is long and persistent with notes of chocolate, spice, and smoke.

Food pairing

An ideal match for steak, grilled meats, pasta with rich sauces, game dishes, and aged cheeses.

Aging potential

Enjoyable now, but will continue to evolve for 3-5 years, gaining more complexity and integration of fruit and oak notes.

Background story

Braida, established by the late Giacomo Bologna, is synonymous with Barbera at its very best. Inspired by the great French wine regions he visited, notably Burgundy, Giacomo believed that Barbera could rival the world's finest wines. In 1961, he produced his first lightly effervescent Barbera. Continuing his quality journey through experimental vineyard plantings, reduced yields, and late harvesting, he caused a stir by being the first to age Barbera in small oak barrels in 1982, the original “Super Barbera.”

This led to the creation of the renowned crus: Uccellone, Bricco della Bigotta, and Ai Suma. Success and recognition were not achieved overnight, but Giacomo's sustained persistence led to Bricco dell’Uccellone being regarded as not only one of the finest wines of Barbera but one of the finest red wines of Italy. Today, his daughter Raffaella manages the winery, and his son Giuseppe oversees growing and production, with their spouses handling exports and administration. This family operation values the environment, tradition, and heartfelt passion, resulting in wines that evoke deep emotions. Their uncompromising pursuit of quality, devotion to the terroir, innovation, and sustainability are matched by their genuine conviviality and warmth of welcome. We have had the absolute pleasure of collaborating with them for over 20 years.
