Vineyards
Crafted from Alfrocheiro, Tinta Grossa, and Baga varieties, this wine originates from the unique terroir of Herdade Aldeia de Cima in the Alentejo region. The vineyards are positioned on the slopes of Serra do Mendro, where poor, shallow, and well-draining soils, mainly diorite and shale, provide a challenging yet rewarding environment. The site benefits from cooling breezes, encouraging balanced acidity in the grapes despite the warm regional climate.
Winemaking
Using minimal intervention, the grapes undergo fermentation in amphorae (Cocciopesto clay jars), which allows for natural micro-oxygenation without overpowering oak influence. The wine ages for 12 months in these amphorae, capturing a pure expression of Alentejo’s indigenous grape varieties and amplifying its mineral character.
Appearance
Translucent ruby red with a clear, brilliant quality.
Nose
Delicate and complex, with aromas of red berries, subtle balsamic notes of rockrose and Mediterranean scrub, and hints of earthy minerality.
Palate
The palate is refined and smooth, showcasing flavours of red fruit, vibrant acidity, and structured tannins. The texture is both light and layered, with a firm mineral backbone that reflects the unique soil composition of the Serra do Mendro, culminating in a balanced, enduring finish.
Food pairing
Pairs beautifully with lamb dishes, charcuterie, or Mediterranean-inspired fare that highlights fresh herbs and earthy flavours.
Background story
Herdade Aldeia de Cima is an expansive 1750-hectare estate located in Alentejo near Santana, Portugal, owned by the Amorim family. Integrating diverse landscapes—cork and holm oak forests, ancient olive groves, and vineyards—the estate follows sustainable agroforestry practices with a mission to restore biodiversity in the Serra do Mendro. This approach harmonises traditional methods with minimal intervention to protect Alentejo’s natural heritage and local ecosystem.
Situated at Serra do Mendro's highest point, the vineyards benefit from 34 distinct micro-terroirs that enhance the wine’s expression of native grape varieties. The estate’s vineyards, currently transitioning to organic production, are dedicated to Alentejo’s heritage, with native red and white varieties crafted into three wine ranges: Reserva, Garrafeira, and Myndru. Reserva highlights classic Alentejo elegance, Garrafeira offers structured, bottle-aged wines, while Myndru captures delicate aromatics from skeletal soils.
Each wine is released two years post-harvest to achieve full complexity, celebrating the region's winemaking tradition and commitment to environmental balance.
