Vineyards

Quinta do Cardo, Portugal's first certified organic vineyard since 2009, is situated on a plateau at 750 metres above sea level in the Beira Interior region. The estate’s high altitude provides natural protection against many diseases and pests, minimizing the need for chemical interventions and ensuring a sustainable approach to viticulture. The grapes for the Reserva Tinto 2019—a blend of Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, and Alfrocheiro—are sourced from organically farmed vines planted in granite-dominant soils with elements of schist and sand. These conditions, combined with the surrounding Marofa and Castelo Rodrigo mountains, result in wines of depth, freshness, and structure.

Winemaking

The grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness and undergo meticulous selection before vinification. After a cold pre-fermentation maceration, fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures to retain the grapes' vibrant character. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels for 12 months, lending it additional structure, complexity, and refined tannins. Minimal intervention ensures the wine fully expresses its organic, high-altitude terroir.

Appearance

A deep ruby colour with violet reflections, indicating concentration and youth.

Nose

The bouquet is intense and layered, revealing aromas of ripe black fruits such as blackberries and plums, intertwined with floral notes of violets, hints of spice, and subtle touches of cedar from the oak ageing.

Palate

Rich and full-bodied, the wine offers flavours of dark berries, black cherries, and dried herbs, balanced by fine-grained tannins and a vibrant acidity. The oak ageing adds complexity, with hints of vanilla, cinnamon, and a touch of smokiness, leading to a long, harmonious finish.

Food pairing

This Reserva Tinto pairs perfectly with roasted lamb, beef stews, or game dishes such as venison. It also complements aged cheeses, charcuterie, or mushroom-based dishes, making it a versatile companion for hearty meals.
