Vineyards
Located on the high-altitude terrain of Silvã de Cima in Dão, Taboadella’s Alfrocheiro vines thrive in the region’s granitic soils, which enhance the mineral complexity of this unique variety. Originally emerging in the Dão after the phylloxera crisis, Alfrocheiro has adapted exceptionally well to the area’s cool climate, which allows the grape to develop its full aromatic potential.
Winemaking
This single-varietal wine, made from 100% Alfrocheiro, undergoes a meticulous vinification process. The grapes are manually harvested and then fully destemmed through vibration sorting, ensuring only the finest berries proceed to fermentation. The wine is aged for nine months in French oak barrels (30% new and 70% older barrels), which softens the tannins and adds depth, while maintaining a focus on the grape’s natural fruit profile.
Appearance
Deep ruby with violet hints, showing its intensity and structure.
Nose
Aromatic and complex, with notes of red cherry, blackberry, and dried flowers, complemented by hints of pine, cedar, and a touch of chocolate orange. The fragrance reflects both the fruit purity and subtle oak influence.
Palate
Medium-bodied and finely structured, the palate reveals layers of red fruits, fine-grained tannins, and balanced acidity, with flavours of brambleberries, subtle spices, and a smooth, lingering finish. The wine’s acidity and tannins promise further development over the next few years.
Food pairing
Ideal with sous vide lamb, roasted pork, or earthy dishes featuring wild mushrooms. Its acidity and tannin structure also make it an excellent companion for Portuguese cheeses, especially Queijo de São Jorge and Rabaçal.

Background story
Located in the Dão region, the Taboadella estate combines deep historical roots with modern winemaking. The Amorim family, known for their contributions to the wine industry since 1870, purchased the estate and revitalized its unique 42-hectare vineyard in Silvã de Cima. Sitting on a high plateau between the Vale do Pereiro and Vale do Sequeiro valleys, this vineyard benefits from granite soils and a climate influenced by both Atlantic and continental patterns. These elements foster a balanced environment, where native Portuguese grape varieties thrive without irrigation, preserving the land’s authentic expression.
Taboadella’s winery, designed by architect Carlos Castanheira, reflects the family’s commitment to sustainability and precision. Using natural materials like cork and wood, the building is integrated into the landscape, with advanced gravity flow systems that minimize handling and protect the fruit’s integrity. Wines are aged in French oak barrels crafted from century-old trees, a process that enhances the wines' elegance and complexity.
Beyond its contemporary revival, Taboadella’s history dates back to Roman times, evident from ancient relics such as a 1st-century wine press carved into monolithic rock, underscoring the area’s longstanding winemaking heritage. This unique blend of ancient tradition and modern expertise allows Taboadella’s wines to authentically capture the essence of the Dão terroir, embodying both the legacy and future of this historic wine region.
