Vineyards
Château d'Yquem, situated in the heart of the Sauternes appellation in Bordeaux, is renowned as one of the world’s greatest sweet wine producers. The estate spans 113 hectares, with vines planted on a mix of gravel, clay, and limestone soils that provide excellent drainage and retain warmth, encouraging the development of botrytis cinerea (noble rot). The vineyard’s unique location and meticulous care ensure grapes of exceptional concentration and complexity.
Winemaking
The 1976 vintage benefited from a particularly warm and dry growing season, resulting in intensely ripe and concentrated fruit. The grapes, predominantly Sémillon with a smaller proportion of Sauvignon Blanc, were hand-harvested in multiple passes (tries), ensuring only the botrytised berries were selected. Fermentation occurred slowly in oak barrels, followed by maturation for up to three years in French oak, enhancing the wine’s depth and longevity.
Appearance
Deep golden amber with luminous highlights, showcasing its maturity and richness.
Nose
The nose is profoundly aromatic, offering a luxurious bouquet of dried apricots, candied orange peel, and honey, layered with notes of toasted almonds, saffron, and a touch of caramel.
Palate
On the palate, this vintage is opulent and unctuous, with flavours of ripe tropical fruits, honeycomb, and butterscotch. Vibrant acidity balances the sweetness, providing freshness and structure. The finish is incredibly long and complex, leaving impressions of dried fruit, spice, and a hint of vanilla.
Food pairing
This Château d'Yquem pairs exquisitely with foie gras, blue cheeses such as Roquefort, or fruit-based desserts like tarte Tatin. It can also be enjoyed on its own as a luxurious after-dinner drink.
Background story
Château d'Yquem’s history dates back to 1593, and it has long been regarded as the pinnacle of Sauternes winemaking. Classified as a Premier Cru Supérieur in the 1855 classification, it is the only estate to hold this distinction.
