Vineyards
Sérafin Père et Fils’ Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 2002 is made from old vines, some over 60 years of age, planted in the prestigious village of Gevrey-Chambertin in Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits. The vines are rooted in limestone-rich soils with a mix of clay, providing excellent drainage and imparting complexity and minerality to the wine. Sustainable viticulture is practised to preserve the health of the vineyard and enhance the expression of its unique terroir.
Winemaking
The grapes were hand-harvested and rigorously sorted to ensure only the finest fruit was selected. Fermentation took place in small stainless steel vats with indigenous yeasts, allowing the pure expression of the fruit. The wine was aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, 50% of which were new, imparting structure, depth, and a subtle oak influence. Minimal intervention in the winemaking process ensures the preservation of the vineyard’s natural characteristics.
Appearance
Deep ruby red with garnet hues, reflecting its maturity.
Nose
The nose is refined and complex, offering aromas of black cherries, raspberries, and wild strawberries, interwoven with notes of truffle, leather, and a touch of smoky spice.
Palate
On the palate, this wine is full-bodied and elegant, with layers of ripe red and black fruit complemented by earthy undertones and hints of vanilla and cedar. The tannins are velvety and well-integrated, while the bright acidity provides balance and vibrancy. The finish is long and harmonious, showcasing the wine’s depth and ageing potential.
Food pairing
This Gevrey-Chambertin pairs beautifully with roasted game, duck confit, or beef bourguignon. It also complements mushroom-based dishes and aged cheeses such as Comté or Gruyère.
