Vineyards
Quartz Reef’s Single Vineyard Pinot Noir 2011 is sourced from the estate’s Demeter-certified biodynamic vineyard in Bendigo, Central Otago, New Zealand. The vineyard, established in 1998, is renowned for its quartz-laden soils and meticulous vineyard management under winemaker Rudi Bauer. Situated on a north-facing slope, the vineyard’s schist soils with a quartz-rich sublayer contribute to the wine’s distinctive mineral character. The region’s cool climate and significant diurnal temperature variations allow for slow ripening, preserving acidity and enhancing flavour concentration.
Winemaking
The grapes were hand-picked and meticulously sorted to ensure only the finest fruit was used. Fermentation occurred in open-top fermenters with wild yeasts, followed by gentle punch-downs over a 21-day maceration period for optimal extraction and integration. The wine was aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, 25% of which were new, adding complexity and balance.
Appearance
Bright ruby red with garnet reflections.
Nose
The nose is elegant and layered, offering aromas of red cherries, raspberries, and wild strawberries, complemented by hints of dried herbs, spice, and earthy undertones.
Palate
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied with silky tannins and vibrant acidity. Flavours of red berries, pomegranate, and subtle oak spice are beautifully integrated, leading to a long, mineral-driven finish.
Food pairing
This Pinot Noir pairs well with roasted duck, herb-crusted lamb, or wild mushroom risotto. It also complements soft cheeses like Brie or Camembert.
