Vineyards
The 2012 Single Vineyard Pinot Noir is crafted from Quartz Reef’s biodynamically managed vineyard in Bendigo, reflecting a vintage marked by steady ripening conditions that enhanced the fruit’s balance and complexity. The quartz-laden soils and cool climate create ideal conditions for growing Pinot Noir, resulting in wines with vibrant acidity and depth of flavour. The vintage benefited from a long growing season, producing fruit with exceptional balance and complexity.
Winemaking
The grapes were hand-harvested and carefully sorted to ensure optimal quality. Wild yeast fermentation occurred in open-top fermenters, with gentle punch-downs over a three-week period to ensure balanced extraction of colour and tannins. The wine was aged for 14 months in French oak barrels, 30% of which were new, contributing structure and finesse.
Appearance
Deep ruby red with a luminous clarity.
Nose
The bouquet is expressive, with aromas of black cherries, plums, and redcurrants, interwoven with notes of violet, clove, and a touch of forest floor.
Palate
This Pinot Noir is full-bodied and well-structured, with velvety tannins and refreshing acidity. Flavours of dark berries, savoury herbs, and a hint of spice are balanced by a fine mineral backbone, culminating in a long, elegant finish.
Food pairing
Pairs beautifully with venison, roast pork with herbs, or dishes featuring truffles. Its complexity also complements aged cheeses such as Gruyère or Manchego.
