Vineyards
Vieux Château Saint André is located in Montagne-Saint-Émilion, a satellite appellation of Bordeaux’s Saint-Émilion region. The vineyard spans 8 hectares, planted on limestone and clay soils that provide excellent drainage and contribute to the wine’s structure and minerality. The vines average 35 years of age, with sustainable farming practices employed to preserve the quality of the terroir.
Winemaking
The 2015 vintage benefited from an exceptional growing season, with warm days and cool nights promoting optimal ripening. The grapes, predominantly Merlot with a small proportion of Cabernet Franc, were hand-harvested and sorted. Fermentation occurred in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by ageing for 12 months in French oak barrels, 30% of which were new, adding depth and complexity.
Appearance
Deep ruby red with garnet reflections.
Nose
The nose offers aromas of ripe black cherries, plums, and blackberries, complemented by hints of cedar, tobacco, and a touch of spice.
Palate
Full-bodied and balanced, the palate reveals flavours of dark fruit, liquorice, and earthy undertones. Silky tannins and bright acidity lead to a long, harmonious finish.
Food pairing
This wine pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, duck confit, or mushroom-based dishes. It also complements aged cheeses like Comté or Gruyère.
Background story
Vieux Château Saint André, owned by the Berrouet family, reflects a legacy of winemaking excellence. Jean-Claude Berrouet, the celebrated former winemaker of Château Pétrus, managed the estate until 2002, when his son, Jean-François Berrouet, took over the winemaking responsibilities. Together, they maintain a philosophy of producing wines that reflect their terroir with elegance and restraint. As Jane Anson notes in 'Inside Bordeaux,' the estate delivers wines of "unfussy brilliance," showcasing the potential of Montagne-Saint-Émilion to produce exceptional quality at accessible prices.
