Vineyards

Sourced exclusively from the Las Planas vineyard, planted in 1980 on the slopes of Yerga Mountain, this site benefits from high altitude and a unique microclimate. The combination of clay-calcareous soils and mature Viura vines contributes to the wine's distinctive minerality and depth.

Crafted from 100% Viura, the grapes are hand-harvested and carefully selected. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures to preserve varietal purity. The wine then undergoes 24 months of aging in fine-grained American and French oak barrels, followed by a minimum of 16 months in bottle, enhancing its complexity and structure. Production is limited, with only 2,298 bottles made.

Appearance

This wine displays a pale golden colour with hints of gold and pronounced tears, indicating both its richness and aging potential.

Nose

The nose is highly expressive, offering layers of aniseed, fine wood, and balsamic notes intertwined with honey and candied dried peaches. These aromas evolve, revealing the wine's depth and the nuances of its oak aging.

Palate

On the palate, Las Planas 2018 has a smooth entry, developing with a pleasing freshness, volume, and a layered complexity. Flavours of peach compote and delicate, varied wood notes provide a refined richness. The wine’s texture is both fresh and velvety, with a long, persistent finish that is fine and elegant, showcasing the balance between oak and fruit.

Food pairing

This complex and refined white pairs beautifully with grilled seafood, roasted poultry, and creamy cheeses, enhancing the richness and complementing the wine’s layered flavours.

Background story

Viñedos de Alfaro, a family-owned winery in Rioja Oriental, has been producing exceptional wines since 1974 across its 100 hectares in Alfaro and Aldeanueva de Ebro. Known for cultivating native varieties such as Graciano, Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo, and Viura, the estate practices sustainable viticulture and holds High Environmental Value (HVE) certification, reflecting its commitment to quality and environmental care.

In 2005, a state-of-the-art winery was established, enabling meticulous control from vineyard to bottle. Viñedos de Alfaro’s two ranges include the classic Real Agrado and a limited-production series of single-vineyard cuvées like Rodiles and Conde del Real Agrado, each aged in French and American oak barrels for depth and complexity. Key vineyards such as Canterabuey, Rioja’s first Viñedo Singular (Single Vineyard), and La Planas on Yerga Mountain, reflect the diversity of Rioja Oriental’s terroir.

These are authentic wines that have a sense of place. Whilst honouring the region's heritage they are also pioneers both within Rioja and in their craft as winemakers.
