Winemaking

The grapes for Libertà are sourced from the younger vineyards of the Collazzi estate, planted on a mix of clay and limestone soils rich in minerals. Hand-harvested and quickly transported to the cellar, each variety is vinified separately to preserve the character of each grape. Malolactic fermentation is done at 25°C in stainless steel tanks, ensuring the wine retains its freshness while developing complexity. The wine is aged for one year in a combination of wooden casks and tanks, followed by two months of bottle aging before release. The estate’s warmer and drier microclimate ensures optimal ripening, enhancing the wine’s balance and elegance.

Appearance

A deep, vivid red, indicating the excellent quality of the grapes and meticulous vinification.

Nose

The nose reveals dominant balsamic notes from the Merlot, complemented by the spiced black pepper of Syrah and the aromatic complexity of Cabernet Franc. Floral hints round out the bouquet, adding to the wine’s inviting aromatic profile.

Palate

On the palate, this wine is soft, round, and well-structured, with smooth, integrated tannins and a harmonious balance of fruit and acidity. The richness of Merlot, the spiciness of Syrah, and the fragrant elegance of Cabernet Franc combine beautifully, offering a long, complex finish without being overpowering.

Food pairing

Libertà pairs beautifully with appetisers, cold cuts, and rich pasta dishes with meat sauces. It also complements aged cheeses, stewed meats, and dry chocolate biscuits, making it a versatile choice for a wide variety of dishes.

Background story

Collazzi, located just a few kilometres from Florence, is a magnificent estate owned by the Marchi family since 1933. This 400-hectare property, originally designed by Michelangelo in 1560, features over 25 hectares of vineyards and 140 hectares of olive trees. Collazzi is not only known for its historical significance but also for its modern winemaking excellence.

The estate’s vineyards have undergone significant restructuring since the mid -1990s by the latest generation of the family, Marchese Lamberto de' Frescobaldi, along with oenologist Alberto Torelli.

The sandy, clayey, limestone-rich soils of Collazzi, along with its abundant rocky content, are perfectly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, as well as the traditional Sangiovese. This varietal approach, in harmony with the temperate microclimate of the area and the meticulous grape selection, alongside extensive use of oak barrels for both fermentation and ageing, results in suave, fruit-driven, and complex wines.

Collazzi continues to produce wines that are not only of exceptional quality but also reflect the rich history and dedication of the Marchi family. Their commitment to sustainable practices and innovation ensures that Collazzi remains a leader in the region.
