Vineyards
Châteauneuf-du-Pape Piedlong 2014 by Famille Brunier is sourced from the historic vineyards of Piedlong, situated on a plateau in the heart of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The vineyards are renowned for their characteristic soils composed of large, rounded pebbles (galets roulés) and red clay, which contribute to the wine’s depth and complexity. The Grenache vines, some over 80 years old, thrive in this unique terroir, producing low yields of concentrated fruit. Sustainable viticulture is practised, ensuring minimal intervention and respect for the environment.
Winemaking
The grapes are hand-harvested and meticulously sorted to ensure only the highest quality fruit is used. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled concrete vats using indigenous yeasts, preserving the authentic expression of the terroir. The wine undergoes a long maceration period for optimal extraction of colour, flavour, and tannins. It is then aged for 20 months in a combination of large foudres and concrete vats, enhancing its structure while maintaining freshness.
Appearance
Deep garnet red with subtle brick hues, indicative of its maturity.
Nose
A complex bouquet of ripe red fruits, such as cherry and raspberry, interwoven with notes of garrigue, dried herbs, and a hint of leather. Subtle nuances of liquorice and spice add further depth to the aromatic profile.
Palate
On the palate, this Châteauneuf-du-Pape is full-bodied and well-structured, with fine-grained tannins and a refreshing acidity. Flavours of red plum, black cherry, and wild strawberry are complemented by hints of thyme, black pepper, and a touch of earthiness. The finish is long and layered, with lingering notes of savoury herbs and minerality.
Food pairing
This wine pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, beef stew, or game dishes. It also complements hard cheeses and Mediterranean-inspired cuisine, such as ratatouille or herb-crusted pork.
