Vineyards
‘Casta Diva’ is produced from Moscatel grapes grown in Parcent, Alicante, where Felipe Gutiérrez de la Vega cultivates 12 hectares in a region known for its warm, Mediterranean climate. The vineyard’s proximity to the coast enhances the ripening process, allowing the grapes to achieve intense sweetness and flavour complexity.
Winemaking
This dessert wine is made in the passito style, where Moscatel grapes are partially dried on straw mats after harvest, concentrating the sugars and flavours. The wine is aged in a mix of Hungarian and Caucasian oak barrels, adding richness and complexity, and is only lightly filtered, maintaining the natural essence of the wine.
Appearance
Golden amber in colour, with a vibrant clarity.
Nose
The aromatic profile bursts with orange blossom, butterscotch, and subtle herbal notes of liquorice root, delivering an alluring bouquet.
Palate
Rich and multi-layered, the palate reveals flavours of marmalade, nectarine, honey, and spices. The sweetness is beautifully balanced by a gentle acidity, giving it a lengthy, satisfying finish.
Food Pairing
This wine pairs wonderfully with blue cheeses, fruit tarts, or other desserts that complement its richness.
Background Story
La Báscula was founded by South African winemaker Bruce Jack and Master of Wine Ed Adams, combining their passion for Spanish wine with a focus on balance between indigenous Spanish varieties and innovative winemaking techniques. Named after the Spanish word for “weighing scales,” La Báscula symbolises the equilibrium in their wines between tradition and modernity, producing expressive, high-quality Spanish wines.
