Creation of Braida di Giacomo Bologna Bricco dell’Uccellone 2008
Giacomo Bologna is regarded as a pioneer who transformed the Barbera grape’s reputation on the world stage, especially following the methanol scandal in 1986. By reducing yields and utilising French barrique barrels for ageing, he created a wine that was not only flavourful but also age-worthy—attributes previously un-associated with Barbera. The release of his first 'Bricco dell’Uccellone' in 1982 marked a significant milestone, combining innovation with tradition, and quickly establishing the wine as a leader in both national and international markets.
Vineyards and grapes
Bricco dell’Uccellone grapes are grown in a 6-hectare single vineyard located on a southern slope in the township of “Bricco,” just above Rocchetta Tanaro. The soil, known as ‘medio impasto,’ consists of equal parts clay and yellow sand, producing wines with intensely aromatic and savoury flavours. The vineyard's name is derived from a local legend about an old woman affectionately called "l'uselun," meaning "the big bird" in Piedmont dialect.
Winemaking
The winemaking process showcases Braida's commitment to quality. The grapes undergo fermentation in oak barrels, which imparts flavour and structure. The extended ageing in high-quality oak elevates the wine’s profile, allowing for complexity and richness.
Appearance
Bricco dell’Uccellone displays a deep ruby red colour, indicative of its full-bodied character.
Nose
The nose is richly perfumed with dark berry notes, particularly sour cherries, complemented by sweet spice and smoky hints, showcasing the wine's aromatic complexity.
Palate
On the palate, the wine is voluptuous and full-bodied, with rich fruit flavours balanced by crisp acidity. The multidimensional structure perfectly harmonises the grape’s juicy sapidity with the influence of high-quality oak.
Food match
This wine pairs beautifully with rich dishes such as braised meats, game, and aged cheeses, making it ideal for special occasions or gourmet meals.
Background story
Braida, established by the late Giacomo Bologna, is synonymous with Barbera at its very best. Inspired by the great French wine regions he visited, notably Burgundy, Giacomo believed that Barbera could rival the world's finest wines. In 1961, he produced his first lightly effervescent Barbera. Continuing his quality journey through experimental vineyard plantings, reduced yields, and late harvesting, he caused a stir by being the first to age Barbera in small oak barrels in 1982, the original “Super Barbera.”
This led to the creation of the renowned crus: Uccellone, Bricco della Bigotta, and Ai Suma. Success and recognition were not achieved overnight, but Giacomo's sustained persistence led to Bricco dell’Uccellone being regarded as not only one of the finest wines of Barbera but one of the finest red wines of Italy. Today, his daughter Raffaella manages the winery, and his son Giuseppe oversees growing and production, with their spouses handling exports and administration. This family operation values the environment, tradition, and heartfelt passion, resulting in wines that evoke deep emotions. Their uncompromising pursuit of quality, devotion to the terroir, innovation, and sustainability are matched by their genuine conviviality and warmth of welcome. We have had the absolute pleasure of collaborating with them for over 20 years.
