Braida, established by the late Giacomo Bologna, is synonymous with Barbera at its very best. Inspired by the great French wine regions he visited, notably Burgundy, Giacomo believed that Barbera could rival the world's finest wines. In 1961, he produced his first lightly effervescent Barbera. Continuing his quality journey through experimental vineyard plantings, reduced yields, and late harvesting, he caused a stir by being the first to age Barbera in small oak barrels in 1982, the original “Super Barbera”.

This led to the creation of the renowned crus: Uccellone, Bricco della Bigotta, and Ai Suma. Success and recognition were not achieved overnight, but Giacomo's sustained persistence led to Bricco dell’Uccellone being regarded as not only one of the finest wines of Barbera but one of the finest red wines of Italy.

Today, his daughter Raffaella manages the winery, and his son Giuseppe oversees
growing and production, with their spouses’ handling exports and administration.
This family operation values the environment, tradition, and heartfelt passion, resulting in wines that evoke deep emotions. Their uncompromising pursuit of quality, devotion to the terroir, innovation and sustainability are matched by their genuine conviviality and warmth of welcome. We have had the absolute pleasure of collaborating with them for over 20 years.

Braida di Giacomo Bologna "La Monella" 2020 Barbera del Monferrato DOC Frizzante
Grapes: 100% Barbera
ABV: 14%

Vineyards & Background:
La Monella, meaning "the naughty girl" in Italian, was created by Giacomo Bologna as a playful, vivacious expression of Barbera, reflective of its lively and irrepressible nature. This is a frizzante-style Barbera, which is slightly sparkling, embodying a unique character within the Piedmontese wine tradition. The vineyard, located in the Monferrato hills, benefits from the region’s ideal combination of mineral-rich soils and a temperate climate, which bring out the vibrant acidity and bright fruit character of Barbera.

Winemaking:
The grapes are harvested by hand and undergo temperature-controlled fermentation to preserve the bright aromatics and freshness typical of the variety. The wine undergoes a second fermentation in a pressurised tank, creating its frizzante (lightly sparkling) style. This method highlights the natural liveliness and fruit-forward nature of Barbera, producing a wine that is fun, fresh, and meant to be enjoyed young.

Appearance:
Bright, deep ruby red with lively bubbles that hint at its energetic personality.

Nose:
On the nose, La Monella is fragrant and intense, offering explosive aromas of red berries, particularly sour cherries. Hints of violet and a subtle touch of earth add complexity to the fruit-forward profile, making the bouquet both fresh and enticing.

Palate:
The palate is lively and fresh, with flavours of red fruit such as sour cherries and cranberries bursting forth. The frizzante bubbles add a light, refreshing texture, while the wine's acidity and moderate tannins create a well-balanced structure. The finish is juicy and vivacious, with a soft, rounded mouthfeel that makes the wine easily drinkable. True to its name, La Monella is spirited, bright, and fun.

Food Pairing:
This versatile wine pairs beautifully with cold meats, pasta dishes, and spicy stews. It is also perfect with boiled meats, mixed grills, red meat stews, and delicate fowl. Its vibrant character and light fizz make it an excellent choice for a wide range of Italian and Mediterranean dishes.
