Braida, established by the late Giacomo Bologna, is synonymous with Barbera at its very best. Inspired by the great French wine regions he visited, notably Burgundy, Giacomo believed that Barbera could rival the world's finest wines. In 1961, he produced his first lightly effervescent Barbera. Continuing his quality journey through experimental vineyard plantings, reduced yields, and late harvesting, he caused a stir by being the first to age Barbera in small oak barrels in 1982, the original “Super Barbera”.

This led to the creation of the renowned crus: Uccellone, Bricco della Bigotta, and Ai Suma. Success and recognition were not achieved overnight, but Giacomo's sustained persistence led to Bricco dell’Uccellone being regarded as not only one of the finest wines of Barbera but one of the finest red wines of Italy.

Today, his daughter Raffaella manages the winery, and his son Giuseppe oversees
growing and production, with their spouses’ handling exports and administration.
This family operation values the environment, tradition, and heartfelt passion, resulting in wines that evoke deep emotions. Their uncompromising pursuit of quality, devotion to the terroir, innovation and sustainability are matched by their genuine conviviality and warmth of welcome. We have had the absolute pleasure of collaborating with them for over 20 years.

Braida di Giacomo Bologna "Rosso di Braida" Monferrato Rosso DOC 2020
Grapes: Barbera d’Asti, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot
ABV: 14.5%

Vineyards:
Rosso Braida 2020 is sourced from Braida's vineyards located in the Monferrato area, known for its sand and clay soils (impasto misto). These vineyards benefit from the region’s unique microclimate, which allows the Barbera, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot varieties to ripen perfectly, bringing out the natural acidity of Barbera alongside the structure and depth from the Cabernet and Merlot components.

Winemaking:
The wine undergoes fermentation in stainless steel tanks to preserve the freshness and vibrant character of the fruit. After fermentation, it is aged in large oak barrels, which adds subtle notes of spice and vanilla while softening the tannins. The combination of steel and oak aging helps to balance the bright fruit of Barbera with the fuller-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

Appearance:
Deep ruby red with vibrant purple highlights, reflecting the blend’s youthful intensity.

Nose:
The nose is layered and expressive, with ripe red fruit aromas from the Barbera, such as cherry and plum, combined with the darker fruit notes of black currant and blackberry from the Cabernet Sauvignon. The oak aging brings forward hints of cedar, spice, and vanilla.

Palate:
Full-bodied and balanced, with juicy flavours of red cherries, plums, and dark berries. The fine, silky tannins give the wine structure, while the Merlot adds softness to the blend. The finish is long and persistent, with lingering notes of chocolate, spice, and a touch of smoke.

Food Pairing:
This wine is an excellent pairing for steak, grilled meats, and pasta with rich sauces. It also complements game dishes and aged cheeses, making it versatile for a range of hearty meals.

Aging Potential:
Enjoyable now, it will continue to evolve over the next 3-5 years, with the potential to develop more complexity and integration between its fruit and oak-driven notes.
