Braida, established by the late Giacomo Bologna, is synonymous with Barbera at its very best. Inspired by the great French wine regions he visited, notably Burgundy, Giacomo believed that Barbera could rival the world's finest wines. In 1961, he produced his first lightly effervescent Barbera. Continuing his quality journey through experimental vineyard plantings, reduced yields, and late harvesting, he caused a stir by being the first to age Barbera in small oak barrels in 1982, the original “Super Barbera”.
This led to the creation of the renowned crus: Uccellone, Bricco della Bigotta, and Ai Suma. Success and recognition were not achieved overnight, but Giacomo's sustained persistence led to Bricco dell’Uccellone being regarded as not only one of the finest wines of Barbera but one of the finest red wines of Italy.
Today, his daughter Raffaella manages the winery, and his son Giuseppe oversees
growing and production, with their spouses’ handling exports and administration.
This family operation values the environment, tradition, and heartfelt passion, resulting in wines that evoke deep emotions. Their uncompromising pursuit of quality, devotion to the terroir, innovation and sustainability are matched by their genuine conviviality and warmth of welcome. We have had the absolute pleasure of collaborating with them for over 20 years.
Serra dei Fiori La Regina 2018 Langhe Nascetta DOC
Grapes: 100% Nascetta
ABV: 13.5%
Vineyards & Estate Background:
Serra dei Fiori is situated in the rugged hills of Trezzo Tinella, just kilometres from Barbaresco and Alba, in one of the most dramatic parts of the Langhe. The estate, perched at 450 metres above sea level, was purchased in 1988 by the Bologna family in partnership with brothers Renzo and Valerio Giacosa from Neive. The sandy soils, formed from ancient marine conglomerates mixed with calcareous marl, provide the perfect environment for growing native varieties like Nascetta, which has been hailed as the “regina” (queen) of the local white grape varieties. The resurgence of Nascetta was supported by Turin’s Università Agraria, with extensive research leading to its DOC status. La Regina honours this native queen of the region, capturing its purity and elegance.
Winemaking:
The wine is vinified in stainless steel tanks to preserve Nascetta’s fresh, aromatic qualities. No oak is used, allowing the grape’s natural minerality and vibrant acidity to take the spotlight, while the wine reflects the unique terroir of the Serra dei Fiori estate.
Appearance:
Pale straw-yellow with delicate golden hues, showcasing the wine’s freshness and vitality.
Nose:
The nose reveals a highly expressive bouquet of citrus, apple, and pear, with floral notes of acacia blossom and a touch of herbaceousness. Underneath, there are hints of tropical fruit, hay, and grapefruit zest, evolving into more complex flinty and hydrocarbon aromas as the wine ages, reminiscent of the finest white wines of the Rhine.
Palate:
On the palate, La Regina is fresh, lively, and elegant, with a core of citrus and stone fruits, underscored by a distinct mineral character. The wine’s juicy structure is complemented by its crisp acidity and long, refreshing finish. Over time, the wine develops more savoury and mineral-driven flavours, adding depth and complexity.
Food Pairing:
Perfect as an aperitif, La Regina pairs beautifully with raw fish, white meats, and fresh cheeses. Its minerality and acidity make it an excellent companion for seafood and light vegetarian dishes.
Aging Potential:
La Regina 2018 has the potential to age for up to 5-10 years, with its acidity and minerality allowing it to develop greater complexity and further flinty and hydrocarbon notes as it matures.
