Vineyards

Château Latour is one of Bordeaux's First Growth estates, located in the prestigious Pauillac appellation of the Médoc. The estate's core vineyard, known as L’Enclos, covers 47 hectares of deep gravel soils, ideal for cultivating Cabernet Sauvignon, which dominates the blend. The vineyard is planted with vines averaging over 40 years old, ensuring low yields of concentrated and complex fruit. Château Latour has long been committed to sustainable viticulture, employing organic and biodynamic practices to maintain the health of the soil and vines.

Winemaking

The 1975 vintage was produced under meticulous winemaking conditions, ensuring the utmost quality from a challenging year. Grapes were hand-harvested and carefully sorted before fermentation in traditional wooden vats. The wine underwent long maceration to extract colour, flavour, and tannins, followed by ageing in French oak barrels, with a high proportion of new oak used to add depth and complexity. The result is a wine built for long-term ageing, with significant structure and elegance.

Appearance

A deep garnet core with mahogany hues, reflecting its age and maturity.

Nose

The bouquet is beautifully evolved, offering layers of dried blackcurrants, plum compote, and fig, intertwined with earthy notes of cedar, leather, tobacco, and graphite. Hints of roasted coffee and sweet spice emerge as the wine breathes, adding further complexity.

Palate

On the palate, this vintage reveals remarkable depth and refinement. The flavours of stewed black fruits are complemented by tertiary notes of truffle, forest floor, and cigar box. The tannins have softened with age, providing a velvety mouthfeel, while the wine retains a vibrant acidity that brings balance and freshness to the finish. The persistence on the palate is extraordinary, with lingering notes of dried fruit, leather, and spice.

Food pairing

This mature Pauillac pairs exquisitely with roasted game, aged beef, or slow-cooked lamb. It is also a superb companion to fine cheeses, such as aged Comté. Serve at 16-18°C, and decant for at least an hour before serving to allow the wine to fully express its complexity.

Background story

Château Latour’s history dates back to the 14th century, with its reputation as a premier wine estate firmly established by the 18th century. Classified as a First Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, Château Latour has consistently produced some of the most sought-after and long-lived wines in the world. The estate has been owned by the Pinault family since 1993 and continues to be a benchmark for excellence in Bordeaux winemaking. The 1975 vintage, although marked by a hot and dry growing season, has matured gracefully, becoming a true testament to Latour’s ability to craft wines that excel with time.
