“Ferro” is widely regarded as one of the best single-varietal Petit Verdots in the world

Vineyards

The Petit Verdot grapes for Ferro are cultivated in Collazzi's estate vineyards near Florence, The vines, averaging 25 years in age, are planted in clay and limestone soils rich in minerals, situated at an altitude of approximately 150 metres with a south-southwest exposure. This positioning, within a natural amphitheatre, provides a warmer and drier microclimate compared to surrounding areas, allowing for prolonged and complete grape maturation.

Winemaking

The grapes are hand-harvested into small baskets and swiftly transported to the cellar to maintain optimal freshness. Each bunch undergoes manual selection on sorting tables to ensure only the finest grapes are used. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures, followed by malolactic fermentation in 225-litre French oak barrels. The wine is then aged for 24 months in these barrels, enhancing its complexity and structure.

Appearance

The wine exhibits an intense and deep red colour with vibrant purple reflections, highlighting its richness and concentration.

Nose

Fresh cassis and a touch of oak introduce an elegant and intricate aroma, with underlying balsamic notes and hints of cocoa.

Palate

Rich and complex, the palate builds gradually with impressive structure. Juicy tannins provide depth, while a fine balance of fruit, spice, and oak leads to a long, beguiling finish.

Food pairing

The bold structure and complexity of this wine make it a perfect match for red meats, particularly grilled or roasted, as well as rich stews. It also pairs wonderfully with aged cheeses, allowing its depth and tannins to shine.

Background story

Collazzi, located just a few kilometres from Florence, is a magnificent estate owned by the Marchi family since 1933. This 400-hectare property, originally designed by Michelangelo in 1560, features over 25 hectares of vineyards and 140 hectares of olive trees. Collazzi is not only known for its historical significance but also its modern winemaking excellence.

The estate’s vineyards have undergone significant restructuring since the mid -1990s by the latest generation of the family, Marchese Lamberto de' Frescobaldi, along with oenologist Alberto Torelli.

The sandy, clayey, limestone-rich soils of Collazzi, along with its abundant rocky content, are perfectly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, as well as the traditional Sangiovese. This varietal approach, in harmony with the temperate microclimate of the area and the meticulous grape selection, alongside extensive use of oak barrels for both fermentation and ageing, results in suave, fruit-driven, and complex wines.

Collazzi continues to produce wines that are not only of exceptional quality but also reflect the rich history and dedication of the Marchi family. Their commitment to sustainable practices and innovation ensures that Collazzi remains a leader in the region.
