Vineyards
Craggy Range Bannockburn Sluicings 2007 is crafted from select vineyards in the Bannockburn region of Central Otago, New Zealand. Known for its schist and gravel soils, the terroir provides excellent drainage, which promotes low yields and concentrated fruit. The cool climate and significant diurnal temperature variation allow for slow ripening, preserving acidity and enhancing the wine’s aromatic profile.
Winemaking
The grapes are hand-harvested and meticulously sorted to ensure only the best fruit is used. Fermentation occurs in open-top fermenters with gentle punch-downs for optimal colour and flavour extraction. The wine is then aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, 30% of which are new, adding depth and complexity while maintaining balance.
Appearance
Deep ruby red with garnet reflections.
Nose
The nose reveals intense aromas of dark cherries, blackberries, and plums, layered with notes of cedar, dried herbs, and a touch of spice.
Palate
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and structured, with ripe black fruit flavours complemented by hints of liquorice and savoury herbs. Silky tannins and vibrant acidity provide balance, leading to a long, elegant finish.
Food pairing
This wine pairs beautifully with grilled lamb, venison, or mushroom-based dishes. It also complements aged hard cheeses.
