Vineyards

Croft Vintage Port 1963 originates from the finest vineyards of the Douro Valley, a region known for its steep, schistous terraces and unique microclimates that contribute to the complexity and longevity of its wines. The estate’s old-vine plantings include a field blend of indigenous Portuguese varieties, such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Barroca, and Tinta Roriz, each playing a vital role in the structure and depth of this historic vintage.

Winemaking

Hand-harvested at peak ripeness, the grapes underwent foot treading in traditional stone lagares, a method ensuring gentle yet thorough extraction of colour and tannins. The wine was then fortified with grape spirit, arresting fermentation while preserving natural sweetness. After initial ageing in casks, the port matured in bottle for decades, allowing for the full development of its complexity and elegance.

Appearance

Deep mahogany with brick-red hues at the rim, showcasing its extensive ageing and graceful evolution.

Nose

An exquisite bouquet of dried figs, dark chocolate, tobacco leaf, and warm spices, intertwined with hints of cedar, molasses, and caramelised nuts.

Palate

Silky yet powerful, the palate delivers rich flavours of black cherry, prune, and roasted coffee, layered with secondary notes of walnut, spice, and liquorice. The tannins have softened beautifully over time, leading to a persistent and harmonious finish.

Food pairing

Pairs exceptionally well with blue cheeses such as Stilton or Roquefort, dark chocolate desserts, or enjoyed on its own as a luxurious after-dinner indulgence.
