Vineyards

The Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru vineyard lies at the base of the Montrachet hill, straddling the communes of Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet. Renowned for its exceptional terroir, the vineyard benefits from a perfect balance of deep, well-drained soils rich in limestone and clay, ideal for producing powerful and age-worthy Chardonnay. Domaine Etienne Sauzet meticulously tends to their portion of this Grand Cru vineyard, adhering to sustainable practices and low yields to ensure the utmost quality and concentration in the fruit.

The site’s gentle slope and eastern exposure allow for optimal sunlight and cooling breezes, ensuring a slow, even ripening process. This unique microclimate imparts both richness and precision to the resulting wine, reflecting the grandeur of this storied appellation.

Winemaking

The grapes are hand-harvested at peak ripeness and undergo careful sorting to select only the finest fruit. Fermentation takes place in French oak barrels, 40% of which are new, adding structure and depth while allowing the purity of the fruit to shine.

The wine is aged on fine lees for 12–15 months, with regular bâtonnage (lees stirring) to enhance texture and complexity. This process imbues the wine with its characteristic richness and layered elegance. Minimal filtration is employed before bottling to preserve the integrity of the wine.

Appearance

The wine presents a luminous golden hue with green highlights, a testament to its youthful vitality and exceptional clarity.

Nose

The bouquet is multi-dimensional, offering aromas of ripe citrus fruits such as lemon curd and grapefruit, intertwined with notes of white flowers, toasted hazelnuts, and fresh brioche. Subtle mineral undertones and a whisper of flint complete the aromatic profile, showcasing both power and finesse.

Palate

On the palate, this Grand Cru is expansive and opulent, with a creamy texture that envelops the senses. Flavours of baked apple, ripe pear, and Meyer lemon are complemented by hints of almond, vanilla, and a touch of salinity. The wine’s vibrant acidity and finely integrated oak provide balance, leading to a long, persistent finish with echoes of minerality and spice.

Food Pairing

This wine pairs beautifully with luxurious dishes such as butter-poached lobster, roasted turbot with a truffle beurre blanc, or foie gras. It also complements creamy poultry dishes, wild mushroom risottos, and aged Comté cheese.
