Vineyards
The grapes for Felton Road Pinot Noir Block 5 2002 are sourced from a single vineyard block in Bannockburn, Central Otago. Block 5 is renowned for its schist and gravel soils, which provide excellent drainage and contribute a mineral complexity to the wine. The cool climate of Bannockburn, with warm days and cool nights, allows for slow ripening, resulting in concentrated fruit flavours and balanced acidity. The 2002 vintage offered ideal growing conditions, producing fruit with exceptional ripeness and depth.
Winemaking
The grapes were carefully selected and handled to preserve their character. 80% of the fruit was destemmed with no crushing, while 20% was included as whole clusters to enhance complexity and bring a subtle sweetness to the mid-palate. Fermentation took place in open-top fermenters, and the wine was drained by gravity into the underground cellar. It was aged for 18 months in French oak barrels before being racked and bottled without fining or filtration, ensuring a pure expression of the vineyard.
Appearance
Deep ruby with garnet hues, reflecting its richness and ageing potential.
Nose
An enticing bouquet of black plums, ripe cherries, and mocha is layered with subtle notes of forest floor, dried herbs, and a touch of cedar.
Palate
The palate is full-bodied and brooding, offering concentrated flavours of dark fruits such as black cherry and plum, intertwined with hints of chocolate and spice. The oak influence is seamlessly integrated, adding depth without overpowering the fruit. Silky tannins and fresh acidity create a harmonious structure, leading to a long, elegant finish with underlying power and richness.
Food pairing
This wine pairs beautifully with slow-cooked lamb, roasted duck, or venison. It also complements earthy dishes such as wild mushroom risotto or aged cheeses, making it an excellent choice for sophisticated dining.
