Vineyards
The grapes for Percheron Old Vine Cinsault are sourced from old, dry-farmed bush vines in the Western Cape of South Africa. These low-yielding vines, some of which are over 40 years old, thrive in the region's warm, dry climate and well-drained, sandy soils. The combination of old vines and minimal irrigation produces small, concentrated berries with intense flavours and balanced acidity.
Winemaking
The hand-picked grapes are carefully sorted and fermented in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures to retain freshness and vibrant fruit character. A portion of the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation to add texture and softness. The wine is then aged on fine lees for several months, enhancing complexity while preserving the varietal’s bright, juicy profile.
Appearance
Bright ruby red with purple reflections.
Nose
Aromatic and lively, the nose offers vibrant notes of red berries, cherries, and raspberries, with hints of violets, spice, and a touch of earthiness.
Palate
On the palate, this old vine Cinsault is medium-bodied with juicy red fruit flavours of strawberry and redcurrant. The wine’s silky tannins and refreshing acidity are well-balanced, leading to a clean, smooth finish with subtle notes of spice and dried herbs.
Food pairing
This versatile wine pairs beautifully with grilled meats, roasted vegetables, and Mediterranean dishes. It also complements charcuterie boards and soft cheeses, making it a great choice for casual gatherings.
Background story
The name “Percheron” pays homage to the hardy Percheron horses that were historically used in the vineyards of the Western Cape, originally imported by French Huguenots.
The use of old vines, sustainable vineyard practices, and minimal intervention in the winery ensures that this Cinsault captures the essence of the Western Cape’s terroir. With its bright fruit profile and elegant structure, it offers a modern take on a traditional varietal.
