Vineyards
The Vinha Centenária Ref P29/P21 2018 originates from two exceptional plots at Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo. Parcela 29, planted with Touriga Nacional, comprises 3,300 vines situated on a 20% slope at altitudes between 170 and 205 metres. This plot was part of a pioneering study conducted between 1979 and 1981 in collaboration with the Portuguese Ministry of Agriculture and the Douro Winemaking Studies Centre, focusing on monovarietal plantings in the Douro region. The century-old vines of Plot 21 further contribute to the wine's complexity and depth. The schist soils and optimal solar exposure of these plots impart a distinctive minerality and intensity to the grapes, reflecting the unique terroir of the Douro Valley.
Winemaking
This wine is crafted exclusively from Touriga Nacional grapes, hand-harvested from the esteemed Parcela 29 and Plot 21. The grapes undergo meticulous sorting before fermentation in stainless steel vats at controlled temperatures to preserve the varietal's aromatic profile. Post-fermentation, the wine is aged for 12 months in new French oak barrels, enhancing its structure and imparting subtle notes of spice and vanilla. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered to maintain its purity and authenticity.
Appearance
Deep purple hue with garnet reflections, indicating its concentration and potential for aging.
Nose
Aromas of black cherry, raspberry, and black tea, layered with crushed stone and herbal garrigue, capture its origin.
Palate
An exquisite balance of elegance and power. The entry is marked by lush flavours of black plum, dark cherry, and wild blackberry, intertwined with layers of violet and subtle herbal undertones. A finely grained tannic structure lends a firm yet velvety texture, while the characteristic Douro minerality from the schist soils provides a savoury depth and complexity. Hints of liquorice and dark chocolate emerge on the mid-palate, accompanied by whispers of graphite and crushed stone that add a remarkable sense of place. The finish is impressively long and refined, displaying a harmonious blend of ripe fruit, fresh acidity, and minerality, all culminating in a precise, persistent, and lingering finish that speaks to the wine’s exceptional terroir and aging potential.
Food pairing
Complements lamb shoulder, roasted duck, and hearty stews, as well as aged cheeses that mirror its depth.
