Vineyards
The 2020 vintage captures the essence of Montagne-Saint-Émilion’s limestone and clay soils, which contribute to the wine’s refined structure and vibrant acidity. The vineyard, cultivated sustainably, spans 8 hectares and reflects the Berrouet family’s dedication to quality.
Winemaking
2020 experienced a warm growing season, producing grapes with excellent concentration and ripeness. The fruit was hand-harvested and fermented in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures. The wine was aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, 20% of which were new, enhancing its depth and texture.
Appearance
Bright ruby with youthful purple hues.
Nose
The nose is fresh and aromatic, with notes of red cherries, wild strawberries, and raspberries, accented by floral hints and a touch of spice.
Palate
Elegant and balanced, the palate reveals flavours of red fruits, a touch of minerality, and well-integrated oak. Fine tannins and lively acidity lead to a clean, persistent finish.
Food pairing
Pairs well with roasted chicken, grilled lamb, or ratatouille. Its brightness also makes it an excellent choice for charcuterie or lighter dishes.
Background story
Vieux Château Saint André, owned by the Berrouet family, reflects a legacy of winemaking excellence. Jean-Claude Berrouet, the celebrated former winemaker of Château Pétrus, managed the estate until 2002, when his son, Jean-François Berrouet, took over. Together, they produce wines that reflect their terroir with elegance and restraint. As Jane Anson notes in Inside Bordeaux, the estate delivers wines of "unfussy brilliance," showcasing Montagne-Saint-Émilion's potential for exceptional quality at accessible prices.
